Hymenoplasty

At Eravio Hospital, we understand the importance of an intact hymen in our culture. That is why we offer complete and confidential hymen repair surgery, so it ruptures on a woman’s matrimonial first night. This allows a woman to enter a new phase of her life confidently.

What is a hymen?

The hymen is the thin tissue that acts like a seal to the vaginal area. The common myth is that the hymen ruptures only during intercourse. However, the truth is that a hymen may even rupture during vigorous activities like horseback riding, gymnastics, dancing or even PAP smears. Many women may not even realise this event because it is usually painless and bloodless.

What is hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty, or hymen repair surgery, is a simple procedure to either repair the torn hymen or replace it with a new hymen.

Hymenoplasty DOES NOT restore virginity. It only creates a hymen that will allow a woman to tear and bleed the first time they engage in intercourse after surgery.

Who should get hymenoplasty done?

  • Women who need to ensure an intact hymen to follow cultural and religious norms.
  • Women who have undergone traumatic sexual assaults.
  • Women who have suffered from infection due to hymen rupture from rigorous activity.

How to prepare for hymenoplasty?

At Eravio, we understand the sensitivity of the situation requiring hymenoplasty. It is clear that you may feel awkward talking to the specialists. The experts at Eravio are the best for a reason; they are not only skilled in surgery but will also discuss your situation with you with complete empathy and dignity.

Also, at Eravio, at least one lady nurse is always present in the room during the consultation and procedure. Before going ahead with the procedure, you will need to be absolutely clear with the consequences of the surgery and undergo a gynaelogical examination, before going through with it.

How is hymenoplasty performed?

The procedure of hymenoplasty has the following steps:

  1. The surgeon will place you under local anaesthesia.
  2. In case of a torn hymen, the surgeon will stitch up the remaining pieces allowing the hymen to grow back with the healing process.

In case of an absent hymen, the surgeon will tighten up the vaginal walls and use a little of the vaginal tissue to create a new hymen. This new hymen is similar to the natural hymen.

This procedure takes up to one hour maximum.

Recovering from hymenoplasty

After undergoing the surgery, you will need to follow these steps to ensure seamless recovery:

  • Gently wash the area with soap and water regularly to prevent infection.
  • Expect slight swelling and bruising for 2-4 weeks with minimal pain, which will be gone in a week. The doctor will give you a prescription of antibiotics and pain medication to help you get through the first week.
  • Refrain from any vaginal insertion including tampons to allow complete healing of the incisions and prevent rupturing of the new hymen.
  • Avoid any strenuous activities such as lifting heavy weights.

You should be able to return to work the day of undergoing the hymen repair. You may also be able to do light exercise a week after the surgery. However, avoid any strenuous exercise routine for 4-6 weeks, or till the doctor okays it.

What are the risks involved in the hymenoplasty procedure?

It is natural to wonder about the risks involved in a delicate procedure such as hymenoplasty. However, at Eravio Hospital, a vast majority of our patients have been extremely satisfied with the outcome of the procedure. They have not faced any negative outcomes of the procedure.

Although rare, the risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain during intercourse and deformity. Also, it is not possible to predict the level of bleeding during the intercourse after hymenoplasty. These conditions can be treated with medications, or light surgery. But most patients do not face any of these issues.
