Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

It is a common condition in teenage boys and older men that cause their breasts to swell and appear larger than normal. This happens due to an imbalance of the testosterone and estrogen hormone.

While this condition doesn’t affect a person’s health, it does affect men mentally and emotionally, thus affecting their relationships and career. Most of the time, this condition is temporary – like during a boy’s puberty – and goes away on its own. However, if it doesn’t, then there are surgical options to explore.

What are the symptoms of Gynecomastia?

  • Swollen and tender breasts
  • Overweight
  • Discomfort
  • Enlargement
  • Lumps

What are the causes of the Gynecomastia?

  • Natural hormone changes during birth, puberty and old age. In the former two cases, the condition goes away without treatment. However, in old age, the condition peaks between the ages of 50 and 69.
  • Medications such as anabolic steroids, anti-androgens, AIDS medication, anti-anxiety medication and so on.
  • Street drugs and alcohol
  • Health conditions such as hypogonadism, aging, tumours, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, livery failure, and malnutrition.
  • Herbal products
  • Obesity

Diagnosis of Gynecomastia

At Eravio, the doctors will enquire about your and your family’s medical history. They will also perform a physical examination to determine the extent of the condition and its effect on the overall health.

The doctors may prescribe the following tests to get a better idea of your health:

  • Blood tests
  • Mammograms
  • CT and MRI Scans
  • Testicular ultrasounds
  • Tissue biopsy

Treatment for Gynecomastia

If you are worried about breast tissue growth, you must consult a general physician. Upon examination, if the physician thinks you might need treatment, they might recommend of the two courses:

  • Medicines to adjust the hormone balance
  • Surgery to remove excess breast issue

Breast reduction surgery is an option for men who have gynecomastia from losing weight and causing the skin to sag. This surgery is not for men who have gynecomastia due to obesity. Doctors may also prescribe a lifestyle change including balanced diet and exercise to treat gynecomastia. But that may not always work.

It is possible to employ the laser technique to treat gynecomastia. The procedure works similar to the laser liposuction method and results in the well-sculpted chest.

Laser Treatment for Gynecomastia at Eravio

At Eravio, the procedure for laser treatment for gynecomastia is as follows:

The doctor preps you and puts you under local anaesthesia.
The doctor then marks the chest area to insert a cannula in the right place.
This cannula destroys the glandular tissue from within.
After this, the doctor inserts the radial fibre to deliver the laser energy.
The laser energy liquefies the fat which is then extracted by a much finer cannula than the previous one.
The doctor then inserts the optical fibre to contract the skin for the well-sculpted look.

What is the after-effect of the laser surgery for gynecomastia?

After the surgery, you will find that your body has lost almost 85% of the glandular tissue resulting in the reduction of man breasts. Also, the skin is firmer and there is no sagging. But it will take some time to view the final effects on the screen because collagen operates slowly.

Last but not the least, there is minimal scarring.
